Leadership Triangle Graduates Honored with Regional Award Winners

Jim Goodmon
CBC President & CEO Jim Goodmon reminded the crowd about the need for regional cooperation.

The third annual Goodmon Awards presentation took place as part of the fall Leadership Triangle Graduation ceremony at a luncheon at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel & Convention Center in RTP on Monday, December 13, 2004.  Three CBC employees were among the 20 graduates.

Named for CBC President & CEO Jim Goodmon, the awards honor regional thinking and regional cooperation in the Triangle, recognizing leaders in the area who are regionally minded and exhibit that frame of mind in their personal and professional lives.

Goodmon himself helped present the awards, along with his wife and AJFF President Barbara Goodmon.

The Individual Award went to Andrea Harris, president of the NC Institute for Minority Economic Development and the Organization Award to AIDS Alliance Services.  The Fire Departments of Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham & Raleigh received the Partnership Award.  Durham County Board of Commissioners Chairperson Ellen Reckhow rounded out the honorees, receiving the Elected Official Award.

All recipients stressed the need for regional thinking in their comments.  Raleigh Fire Chief Earl Fowler said that it is particularly important for the fire departments to join together because there are no real boundaries when it comes to emergency situations

The three CBC who graduated as Goodmon Fellows included Corporate HR Administrator Angie Emerline, AJ Fletcher Foundation Program Coordinator Deremia Johnson & FOX50 Research Director Gerald Belton.  The trio participated in Leadership Triangle's “Will You Lead? II” program during the fall, training in small groups with career coaches and working with the larger group on leadership challenges.

“The program was tough, but tough in a good way,” said Johnson of the experience.  “There are many great points and ideas I have taken away from this program, but the one idea that's key for me is that in order to lead you must have COURAGE.  Fear has no place in the mind or actions of a true leader.  I am forever changed.”
