Local Commitment

A.J. Fletcher began the CBC heritage of serving the community with its broadcast stations. All CBC stations take this responsibility seriously. Fletcher's grandson, current President & CEO Jim Goodmon, served on the Vice President's Advisory Committee on Public Interest Obligations of Digital Television Broadcasters (Gore Commission) and helped write the committee's final report.

CBC puts its viewers first, carefully considering what programming will best serve them. At the time there was no such thing as a black radio station, and WRAL broke barriers by having an African-American program on its airwaves. WRAL-AM created Spiritual Awakening, a gospel program that still appears on WRAL-TV and WRAZ-TV (FOX 50) every Sunday morning. CBC stations never shrink from making programming decisions based on the family viewers rather than ratings, refusing to run network programming that demeans the institution of marriage & the family.

CBC also believes in giving political candidates a forum to reach the community, giving our viewers the information they need to make educated decisions. With Candidates & Issues, CBC gives candidates in major races a chance to discuss views during evening newscasts.

CBC has been awarded many times over for its stations' public affairs programming, including the award-winning SmartStart Kids & StudentTelevision.

CBC also strives to "keep it local" with emphasis on local events and community members. "Homegrown MIX" on WRAL-FM launched in 2003 when Goodmon realized local artists had few forums for their music in the Triangle.
