99.9 The Fan (formerly WCMC-FM)Overview History 99.9 The Fan was already the flagship station of Carolina Hurricanes when the station launched. While still in a country music format, WCMC-FM entered into an agreement with the Canes in June 2007. 99.9 The Fan’s sister station WRAL-FM had become the NC State Wolfpack’s flagship station in April of that year. So 99.9 The Fan already had a strong connection to several Triangle sports teams when it launched. In conjunction with WRAL-TV’s Sports Team and WRAL.com, 99.9 The Fan launched a new Web site www.wralsportsfan.com to merge the television and radio coverage into one place on the World Wide Web. The station also operates a promotional web site which can be viewed at www.ESPNTriangle.com. In late October 2008, 99.9 The Fan entered into an agreement with ESPN Radio to become their Triangle affiliate. The Fan launched their new ESPN coverage on Monday, December 1, 2008. The station has also been a leader in utilizing HD Radio technology which allows listeners with HD Radio receivers to listen to multiple stations on one FM frequency. In April of 2012 the station began simulcasting WDNC-AM (620 The Buzz) on WCMC-HD2. A new sports station known as "99.9 HD3 The Ticket" was launched on WCMC-HD3. WCLY-AM (1550 AM ESPN Deportes) is now being simulcast on WCMC-HD4. |
